Michael T. Thompson, partner with the firm, focuses his practice on probate, taxation, trusts and estates, disability law, elder law, special needs trusts, guardianships, formation and governance of non-profit entities, charitable planning, and advice to closely-held businesses. He has over twenty-five years of experience in taxation and trusts and estates in New Jersey and New York. From 2021 to 2025, Michael was Of Counsel in the Tax, Trusts and Estates Department at Coughlin Midlige & Garland, LLP. He was a shareholder with Cestone & Thompson, P.C. from 2010 to 2021. He was an associate in the Tax, Trusts and Estates Practice Group at Coughlin Duffy LLP from 2008 to 2010.

Michael received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Rutgers College, his law degree from Rutgers University Law School – Camden and his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association (Elder Law and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Sections), the New York State Bar Association and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Michael is a past member of the Advisory Council for Dress for Success Morris County. Michael is a frequent lecturer to legal, business and community groups. Michael previously served four-year terms on the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Office of Attorney Ethics, District VB and XB Ethics Committees.

Michael serves as a board member and treasurer for Head Start Community Program of Morris County, which provides early child development and school readiness for prenatal through preschool-age children from low-income families. Michael is past president and current treasurer of the Rotary Club of the Mendhams, whose members engage in local service projects, support both local and international charities, and provide college scholarships to graduating seniors from West Morris Mendham High School and Gill St. Bernard’s School who embody Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”. Michael is a past member of the Advisory Council for Dress for Success Morris County.
